Treadmill Test

A treadmill/ stress test is performed to help determine how well the heart handles work and the risk of heart disease.

During exercise the body works harder, hence requires more oxygen so the heart has to pump more blood. Therefore, this test helps determine if there is any reduced blood supply indicating any narrowing or blockages.

What to Expect?

  • You will be asked to bring comfortable clothes and walking shoes convenient to be worn while walking on the treadmill.
  • Your blood pressure, heart rate and other vital signs will be checked.
  • Your chest will be cleaned and shaved if necessary.
  • 10 ECG patches/ stickers will be placed on your upper body with some wires attached (as shown in the pic).
  • A consent for the test will be taken by the attending doctor/nurse.
  • The treadmill starts slowly and increases gradually in speed and height. You will be monitored on the computer while walking and your blood pressure will be taken every 3 mins.
  • The test will be stopped once you have completed it, if any changes are noted on the monitor or you start to feel uncomfortable or symptomatic.
  • After the treadmill is stopped, you will be monitored for another 4 to 5 mins and after cleaning up and changing, a copy of the report is given to you and discussed by your doctor for further assessment and treatment as required.
